  13. Maynard MaynStream for DOS v3.1 is compatible with LANtastic 4.x (with the
  14. exclusion of the isleLAN feature).

  17. Product Overview:
  18. The Maynard family of tape backup systems are designed for fast reliable
  19. backup storage of local and network hard disk drives.  Tests were conducted
  20. using a Maynard 525Q (525 MB) tape drive and Maynard 16 bit SCSI interface
  21. card.  The tape backup software can only be used on the machine where the
  22. tape drive has been installed, therefore, to backup a disk drive on another
  23. machine in the network (redirected drive) requires that the remote PC must be
  24. running the LANtastic SERVER program.

  27. Installing MaynStream for DOS:
  28. The installation of the MaynStream backup software is accomplished from
  29. floppy disks.  At the PC where the tape drive is installed, insert MaynStream
  30. installation disk #1 in the drive and from the floppy prompt type:

  32.    INSTALL <Destination Drive:\Directory>
  33.  
  34. Where "Destination Drive and Directory" is the desired location for the tape
  35. backup software (e.g. "C:\MAYNARD").  Be sure to answer "No" to the isleLAN
  36. network stations question since this option is redundant to and incompatible
  37. with LANtastic.

  40. Configuration:
  41. After successful installation, perform the following steps to complete the
  42. configuration:
  43.  
  44.    Add the following statement to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
  45.  
  46.    Set msii=<Destination Drive:\Directory>
  47.  
  48.    Configure your backup requirements using the interactive menu program
  49.    TMENU.  Some recommended configuration settings are:

  68.    Note that running the DOS file locking program SHARE is required in order
  69.    for the tape backup software to detect open files and create the SKIPPED
  70.    script.  SHARE should be run on any LANtastic server which will be backed
  71.    up across the network.

  74. Tape Backup Operation:
  75. There are three operational modes supported by MaynStream software.  The
  76. interactive mode provided by TMENU, command line mode and the automatic
  77. mode provided by AUTOBACK and AUTORES.
  78.

  80. Interactive:
  81. TMENU is the interactive program used to back up local and redirected drives. 
  82. Redirected drives are listed as "local drives" by TMENU.
  83.  
  84. To backup a disk drive located on a remote system from a LANtastic
  85. workstation, perform the following steps:
  86.  
  87.    Net Login  \\<Server Name> <Username> <Password>
  88.    Net Use <Available Drive Letter>: \\<Server Name>\<Drive Name>
  89.    TMENU      (backup redirected drive to tape)
  90.    Net Unuse <Available Drive Letter>:

  93. Command Line:
  94. Command line mode is for advanced users and is fully described in Chapter 5
  95. of the MaynStream DOS users guide.

  98. Automatic:
  99. To automatically backup disks at a prearranged time, create backup scripts
  100. using TMENU, then schedule the backups using AUTOBACK.  AUTORES is a
  101. small TSR (terminate and stay resident) program that initiates backups at the
  102. scheduled time.  It is recommended by Maynard that AUTORES be the last TSR
  103. loaded and therefore is started after the LANtastic network.  To avoid any
  104. LANtastic pop up message interaction problems with AUTORES, add the
  105. following command after system start up:

  107.    NET Message/Disable POP
  108.  
  109. Also, automatic backups will not begin if ALONE is running on the system 
  110. where the tape unit is installed.

  113. Open File Conflicts:
  114. During the backup process, any open files are bypassed but are noted in a
  115. status log (msii.prt) and in the Skipped script.  At the termination of the
  116. backup session, the user may optionally review the log to determine which,
  117. if any, files were omitted from the backup.

  119. Prior to backing up a disk drive containing the LANtastic control directory,
  120. save the contents of the directory in a backup file by entering the command:
  121.  
  122.    NET_MGR Backup C:\LANtasti.net <backup file name>
  123.  
  124. This can only be done without SERVER loaded.  During the backup procedure,
  125. LANtasti.net control directory files remain open and therefore are skipped
  126. unless specifically excluded from the backup file selection.

  129. Network Disconnects:
  130. If there is a network disconnect during a backup procedure, the error message
  131. "Unrecoverable Error on Drive.  A(bort), R(etry), F(ail)" is displayed.  When
  132. the connection is re-established, the current file being backed up will be
  133. flagged as corrupt.

  138. Maynard MaynStream for DOS tape backup system in a LANtastic network
